BENIN CITY WALLS, EDO STATE
Declared a National Monument on 1st June, 1961 (the site thereof, comprising the land
lying within fifty feet of the crest of the walls on the inside and within hundred feet of the
crest of the walls on the outside: provided that all existing building sited within fifty feet of
the crest of the walls on the outside shall be deemed lawfully erected as long as they exist).
These are the most impressive City Walls in the Southern part of Nigeria. At their highest
point the walls are 9.14m(30ft) high and the ditch(moat) 9.14m(30ft) deep making a total
incline of 18.3m(60ft). Unfortunately, in the past few years, the walls have deteriorated and
been extensively used as a source of building materials.
